Night out with cops, K-9s postponed

VERO BEACH — A family event with local law enforcement and fire rescue agencies has been cancelled because of severe weather conditions expected for the remainder of the week, police said.

The 18th Annual Indian River County National Night Out was scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Humiston Beach Park, 3000 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach. Weather forecasts show a 50 to 60 percent chance of rain throughout the day, as well as a possible thunderstorm and high winds, according to weather meteorologists.

The event will be rescheduled with a tentative date of Oct. 24, police spokeswoman Anna Carden said. Showers are expected for the remainder of the week with 10 to 20 mph winds.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and Vero Beach Police Department host the National Night Out event in Vero Beach. The Sheriff’s Office also hosts the community event in Sebastian.

At these community events, attendees can get to know law enforcement officers, check out police vehicles and equipment, enjoy kids activities, enjoy music and free food. Attendee’s also can greet police K-9’s and watch them do demonstrations, hop on the police motorcycle and take a picture, play games with U.S. Army soldiers, try on SWAT gear and more.

Agencies represented at the local National Night Out are the Vero Beach Police Department, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services, Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Army and Coast Guard, the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County and more.
