Jungle Trail still closed for storm debris cleanup

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Part of the historic Jungle Trail remains closed for Hurricane Irma debris clean up so workers can remove fallen trees, according to a county official.

Jungle Trail closed shortly after Hurricane Irma passed through the county because of flooding and fallen trees, said county Public Works Director Richard B. Szpyrka. The north part of the trail near County Road 510 will remain closed at least until next week as workers remove trees that have fallen across the road.

Jungle Trail will still be accessible from State Road A1A, which is farther north than County Road 510. Details on when the north part of the trail near County Road 510 will reopen were not available.

Last year, public works crews spent 10 days removing fallen trees and blown-over vegetation from Jungle Trail after Hurricane Matthew, Szpyrka said. The trail is on the island and stretches from the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge to Old Winter Beach Road.
