Deputies responded shortly after midnight Sept. 10 to Liberty Magnet Elementary School, which was being used as a shelter. They spoke with Burnside, who was already handcuffed by a deputy working at the shelter as security.

The school, located at 6850 81st St., Vero Beach, is no longer being used as a shelter and classes at all schools in the District resumed on Monday.

Burnside told deputies she had been drinking, but did not bring the beer inside the shelter. But, the deputy working as security said Burnside and another woman snuck beers inside a cooler and brought it into the shelter.

After bringing in the beers, Burnside became loud and accused the other woman of stealing her items, deputies said. All of the other evacuees, including adults and children, were disturbed from Burnside’s outbursts.

The deputy working as a security guard had asked Burnside to calm down, but she refused. Burnside was taken to the county jail for booking.
