Police, lifeguards fail to find missing swimmer

VERO BEACH — The search is on for a man who was swept away while swimming with his girlfriend off Vero’s South Beach.

Police responded to the scene at the beach, east of the Prestige Hotel at 1526 Ocean Drive and south of South Beach, about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police Sgt. Philip Huddy. Officers spoke to the man’s girlfriend, who said they both were swimming when her friend was pulled farther from the shore by the current.

She told police she lost sight of her boyfriend. The woman is from Vero Beach and the man is from Fort Lauderdale.

The man’s identity has not been released. Police, an Indian River County Sheriff’s helicopter, Ocean Rescue lifeguards and Emergency Medical Services were still searching for the man about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
