Hundreds visit Vero’s beaches to see waves

VERO BEACH – While the Vero Beach barrier island was under a mandatory evacuation order Saturday, a steady procession of curiosity seekers headed to the beach to observe the crashing waves.

A handful of beachgoers actually ventured into the surf, but most were content to stroll along the boardwalks at Conn and Humiston Beaches in between the sporadic rain squalls.

Hurricane Irma was still a couple hundred miles to the south, and indications are that the worst of it will stay far from Indian River County.
