More closings announced for Hurricane Irma

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — In addition to the closings of all schools, the courthouse and government offices for Hurricane Irma, the Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services Department has released a list of closings that will take place for the forthcoming weather conditions.

Hurricane Irma, a category 5 hurricane with 185 mph winds, will make landfall in the area sometime Sunday or Monday. It’s expected to bring life-threatening winds, a storm surge and rainfall hazards.

Here is a comprehensive list of the dates and times of closings:

  • All City of Vero Beach recreation facilities and activities held at Leisure Square, the Vero Beach Community Center, Riverside Racquet Complex and the fountains at Royal Palm Pointe will be closed beginning Friday until further notice.
  • City beaches including Jaycee Beach, Humiston Beach and South Beach will be unguarded beginning Friday until further notice. Please visit www.covb.org for updates.
  • The Office of the Clerk to the Board and the Value Adjustment Board will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
  • The Mental Health Collaborative will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Executive Director Brett Hall will be on call should a community need arise.
  • The City of Sebastian will be open until noon on Friday. The Sebastian City Clerk’s Office will be staffed until 4:30 p.m. on Friday for elections qualifications.
  • The Indian River County Property Appraiser’s Office will be closed at noon on Thursday and all day Friday.
  • Indian River County Traffic Operations is reducing the number of signal heads at all span wire intersection in preparation for Hurricane Irma. There will be only one signal head for each direction at most intersections, we are requesting that the public take extra care at these intersections.
  • Waste Management will continue normal garbage and recycling service until Saturday morning.
  • The following Indian River County facilities will be closed beginning Friday:
    • Beaches
    • Parks
    • Shooting Range
    • Aquatic Centers
    • Libraries
    • Intergenerational Center
    • Campgrounds
    • Sandridge Golf Course
  • The Brackett Library will also be closed on Thursday. Sandridge will provide tee times until noon on Friday.
  • Tax Collector’s Office will close at noon on Thursday
  • The Sheriff’s Administration Office will close Thursday and Friday.
  • City of Vero Beach offices will close Friday.
  • City of Fellsmere offices will close Friday.

Man charged in stabbing woman, requiring surgery

VERO BEACH — A 34-year-old man was jailed after a beating and stabbing that left a woman with severe injuries requiring surgery earlier this week, officers said. Police reviewed surveillance footage and described the incident as a vicious, unprovoked attack. "After speaking with medical staff, it was reported that (the victim) received treatment for four lacerations to the lower intestines, two lacerations to the colon and the removal of her spleen," Vero Beach police said in a report. The woman, along with police, identified the suspect as Trayvious Lewis Hullett, who was in a relationship with the woman, reports show. Sebastian police volunteer charged after detectives find child porn images on flash drive

SEBASTIAN — Sheriff's detectives arrested a Sebastian police volunteer after they searched his home and found dozens of images depicting child pornography on a flash drive he owned, officials said. Arnold William Flannery Jr., who served as a volunteer since 2022, was no longer affiliated with the Sebastian Police Department as of Tuesday, said police Capt. Tim Wood.
