Airport releases Irma evacuation schedule

VERO BEACH — Residents who are still thinking about getting out of Irma’s path may want to check with Elite Airways to see if there are any open seats left on flights that would enable them to evacuate Vero Beach before the hurricane arrives.

The Vero Beach Regional Airport on Wednesday released the dates and times of Elite Airways “evacuation” flights that will leave from Vero Beach and go to Asheville, North Carolina and Newark, New Jersey.

Here are the dates and times:

  • 7:15 a.m. Thursday departs Vero Beach, arrives in Asheville at 8:45 a.m.
  • 9:30 a.m. Thursday departs Asheville, arrives in Vero Beach at 11 a.m.
  • 11:45 a.m. Thursday departs Vero Beach, arrives in Asheville at 1:15 p.m.
  • 2 p.m. Thursday departs from Asheville, arrives in Vero Beach at 3:30 p.m.
  • 8 a.m. Friday departs from Vero Beach, arrives in Asheville at 9:30 a.m.
  • 9 a.m. Friday departs from Vero Beach, arrives in Newark at 11:40 a.m.

No return flights have been scheduled, according to officials. It’s unclear seats are still available on these flights, said airport director Eric Menger.

Irma remained a category 5 hurricane with 185 mph winds Wednesday. It’s expected to bring high winds, a possible storm surge and heavy rainfall to the area on Sunday and Monday.
