School District to help with Harvey relief efforts

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Schools across the county will be collecting donations and supplies to send to Houston, Texas, to help with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, according to the School District of Indian River County.

Harvey swept through the Texas Gulf Coast over the weekend and caused massive flooding to streets in Houston. At least 23 people have died from the storm and about 23,000 people have fled to shelters in Texas and Louisiana.

Sebastian River High School’s Red Kettle Club will collect money for the hurricane disaster relief at Friday’s home football game, District officials said. The red kettles will be placed at the entryway of Shark Stadium.

The Red Kettle Club is chartered through the Salvation Army and proceeds will allow the Salvation Army to buy supplies as needed.

“We want to show our support for the citizens of Texas and Louisiana that have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey,” said District Superintendent Mark Rendell. “Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with the challenges associated with the devastating effects of a major hurricane.”

Osceola and Rosewood Magnet Schools have teamed up to collect supplies to send to Texas over the weekend. These items include pre-packaged granola bars, dog and cat food, blankets, towels and socks that will be sent to families staying in shelters throughout Texas.

Vero Beach Elementary will participate in the district’s “Casual for a Cause” day and send proceeds to its “adopted” Kirk Elementary School in Houston, Texas. Imagine Schools South Vero also is participating in “Casual for a Cause” day this Friday and will have proceeds to go its “adopted” Houston Independent School District.

The Treasure Coast Elementary Parent Teachers Association will be collecting hurricane relief items during its Open House Thursday night.
