Man accused of sexual battery against child

VERO BEACH — A 28-year-old man was arrested after he touched an underage girl inappropriately on several occasions, deputies said.

Aaron Robert Avis, of the 5900 block of Ridge Lake Circle, Vero Beach, was charged with sexual battery on a child. He is being held at the Indian River County Jail on $50,000 bond.

A deputy spoke with the child, 12, who told the deputy she lost her virginity to Avis and that they’ve had sex more than 20 times. Deputies contacted Avis and brought him to the Sheriff’s Office to be interviewed.

Avis initially denied any misconduct with the girl, but then confessed after his story changed multiple times, deputies said. He told deputies he had an inappropriate relationship with the girl from 2015 until 2017.

Avis was taken to the county jail for booking.

Man charged in stabbing woman, requiring surgery

VERO BEACH — A 34-year-old man was jailed after a beating and stabbing that left a woman with severe injuries requiring surgery earlier this week, officers said. Police reviewed surveillance footage and described the incident as a vicious, unprovoked attack. "After speaking with medical staff, it was reported that (the victim) received treatment for four lacerations to the lower intestines, two lacerations to the colon and the removal of her spleen," Vero Beach police said in a report. SEBASTIAN — Sheriff's detectives arrested a Sebastian police volunteer after they searched his home and found dozens of images depicting child pornography on a flash drive he owned, officials said.
