INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — As Florida approaches the busiest part of the hurricane season, weather meteorologists offer tips on how residents can stay safe and be prepared for stormy weather.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, weather meteorologists said. The best time to plan for hurricanes is before the season starts.
Residents should make an emergency kit with equipment such as flashlights, water, batteries and a first-aid kit, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. They also should check emergency equipment such as generators and storm shutters.
Meteorologists said residents also should know if they live in a hurricane evacuation area by contacting their local government or emergency management office or by checking the evacuation site website. They should form a family plan, review insurance policies and understand the weather service forecast products.

Those who want more information on the weather forecast products, such as watches and warnings, should visit the National Weather Service Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration site.
Hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena, according to weather meteorologists. On average, 12 tropical storms, six of which become hurricanes, form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico during the hurricane season.
