“Spamalot,” the irreverent, bawdy, hilarious rip-off of the (irreverent, bawdy, hilarious) classic film comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” opens in West Palm Thursday, May 18, at the Kravis Center’s Marshall E. Rinker, Sr. Playhouse. “Spamalot” retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
Anyone familiar with the comedy troupe Monty Python won’t be the least bit surprised that the play includes a bunch of beautiful showgirls, cows, killer rabbits, and French people. The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and received 14 Tony Award nominations. Show times are Tuesday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The May 18 preview performance will benefit the Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Service.
How about closing out the work week relaxing with a little music by the river this Friday in Sebastian’s beautiful, oak-canopied Riverview Park. A popular local group, the 4-piece Bobby Owen Band, will bring a wide range of selections from its 25 years playing up and down the Treasure Coast. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and join the laid-back crowd enjoying the final concert of the Sebastian Chamber of Commerce Concerts in the Park series season. These very popular concerts are free, and there are always refreshments to purchase. During intermission, everybody has a chance to win giveaways from the local business community: This week it’s a biggie – two round-trip tickets to Toronto, compliments of the Orlando-Melbourne International Airport. If you haven’t yet seen the “Larry Kagan: Object/Shadow” sculpture exhibit at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, do so. It is as intriguing a visual experience as you’ll come across, and it’s only there through May 21. Mounted on the walls of the Titelman Gallery and lit from above, Kagan’s sculptures, playful, abstract geometrics using steel rods bent and welded into interconnecting shapes, are enjoyable as three-dimensional drawings in space. But there’s more – the sculptures cast shadow pictures on the gallery’s white walls, as viewers discover with surprise and delight. “Object/shadow” is Kagan’s term for the new category of sculpture he has developed during the past decade. Exclaimed one exhibit visitor, “Kagan’s explanation of how he does it doesn’t dilute the magic one bit.”
You’ll find enchantment, adventure and a garden full of Mother Nature’s incomparable artwork this Saturday during McKee Botanical Garden’s Seventh Annual Fairy and Pirate Festival. McKee, of course, is a joy to visit any time, but this Saturday fairy wings will flutter, plastic swords will be brandished, and visitors of all ages will delight in the mystical wonders of the Garden, transformed for a day into an enchanted land of fairies and pirates. Adults can suspend disbelief for a few hours to see the garden though children’s eyes, discovering its natural wonders sharing the myriad earth-friendly activities. Summer admission rates apply. Hey, fellow Parrotheads, Mr. Margaritaville himself Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefers band are coming to Perfect Vodka Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach Tuesday, May 16. The legendary barefoot beach bum extraordinaire turned 70 last December, and he’s still rockin’ those island shirts and bringing that special brand of calypso/country music. Buffett’s been in the biz for 45 years now, starting as a country singer in the ’60s. Happily for his fans, he moved from Nashville to Key West, where he developed his signature persona and laid-back musical style.
