Vero Beach man scores $500K lottery win

TALLAHASSEE — Five-hundred grand? Nice scratch!

Vero Beach’s John Dalton is celebrating his $500,000 score on a scratch-off ticket purchased from a local store.

The Florida Lottery announced that Dalton, 67, claimed a top prize in the Flamingo Multiplier scratch-off game at lottery headquarters in Tallahassee. Dalton purchased his winning ticket from Hometown Supermarket, located at 4105 U.S. 1 in Vero Beach.

Dalton said his routine is to buy two different Scratch-Off tickets and let his wife choose which one she wants to scratch. “My wife scratched her ticket and told me she had a $10 winner; when I told her that I thought I had a $500,000 winner she didn’t believe me, she thought I had bought a fake ticket to trick her!”

The $500,000 Flamingo Multiplier, a $5 game, launched on Jan. 12 and features more than 7.5 million winning tickets and more than $113 million in total cash prizes. The game’s overall odds of winning are one-in-4.23.
