Vera Richard Wood, 94, Vero Beach

Vera Richard Wood, 94, of Vero Beach, passed away peacefully at her home on Dec. 20, 2015.

She is survived by her son Jeremy Wood, Sr., (Marchetta) of Winter Park and York Harbor, Maine; daughter-in-law Mary Wood of Keene, N.H.; grandchildren Virginia Wood Susi (Phillip) of Orlando, Jeremy Wood, Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., Emily Lawler of Keene, N.H.; great-grandchildren Evelyn Susi, Nicholas Susi, and Vera Lawler.

She was predeceased by her husband Valentine Wood, son Christopher Wood, and grandson Jamie Wood.

Wood was born in New York City, the daughter of Harold C. Richard and Vera Van Buren Richard.

She attended Nightingale Bamford School in New York and the Ethel Walker School 1939 in Simsbury, Conn. During WWII she drove an ambulance and taught art class to children.

She married Valentine Wood of Coronado, Calif., in 1947. They lived in California before moving to Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.; Bermuda; and summers in York Harbor, Maine.

Wood was a member of the Colony Club, N.Y.; Junior League; and Children’s Theater and Puppet Theater, doing performances in schools and hospitals in New York.

She loved playing golf at the York Golf and Tennis Club in York, Maine.

In York Harbor, she was the past President of the Piscataqua Garden Club, Trinity Episcopal Church Ladies Committee, Ladies Committee of York Hospital, and Richard Foundation.

She was most, the most gracious and kind person always taking the time for others.

A celebration of her life will be held next summer in York Harbor.
