Indian River Rowing Club welcomes new director of rowing

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The Indian River Rowing Club, (IRRC)), has named Gary Marra the organization’s new Director of Rowing. IRRC a 501.3(c) was established in 2008 to promote and teach the sport of rowing to the community.

IRRC provides the sport through youth team activity, Vero Beach High School Rowing, individual coaching and master’s level activities.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Gary Marra as our new Director of Rowing,” said Todd Young, President of Indian River Rowing Club’s board of directors. “Gary’s commitment to the development of rowing fits perfectly with our mission. We think he has a great deal to contribute to the continued success of Indian River Rowing Club.”

Marra, a Florida resident, is a graduate of Stetson University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in management, with honors in 2012. He began rowing in high school for Tampa Catholic as a varsity rower and was team captain. At Stetson, he rowed varsity and was captain of their men’s team.

His coaching experience includes novice coaching at the University of Georgia where he oversaw the program of 90-plus athletes and most recently as the director of rowing at Stanton River Bank Rowing club in Jacksonville, Fla., where he ran the high school, middle school youth and adult masters’ programs. He has led teams to wins at the American Collegiate Rowing Association national competition and Florida Scholastic Rowing Championships.

Marra worked to implement an organizational structure and to build a culture that fostered the success of Stanton oarsmen and oarswomen, both youth and masters.

Indian River Rowing Club is in a very important phase of growth, expanding the youth program to include middle school students, expanding participation in the Vero Beach High School Rowing program, implementing new masters learn to row programs and pursuing land to build a community rowing facility.
