Humane Society urges pet preparedness during hurricane season

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB & IRC) is urging families with pets to have a disaster plan in place for themselves and their pets and to never leave animals unattended during hurricanes or other natural disasters.

Indian River County pet parents must register in advance with The Humane Society of Vero Beach and IRC by calling (772) 388-3331 ext. 128 to stay at the Liberty Magnet Pet-Friendly Shelter if no other sheltering option is available. County residents may also download the registration form found on the shelter’s website, www.hsvb.org.

The Humane Society also has the following free materials available to help with emergency preparations: “If You Go, They Go! Disaster Planning for Pet Owners” Brochure: This free brochure on disaster planning for individuals and families with pets. The brochure covers topics including pet identification, determining if you and your pets live in a surge zone, pet supplies needed if you must evacuate with your animals and how to create a pet first aid kit. The information contained in the brochure is also available on the shelter’s website, www.hsvb.org.

Free Pet ID Tags: Indian River County residents can receive free pet ID tags engraved with a unique ID number for each pet as well as the shelter’s 24-hour paging service. Each tag is also inscribed with the sentence “I AM LOST” to ensure that whoever finds the animal can immediately call the shelter. “Emergency! Please Save Our Pets!” Window Stickers: These stickers are free of charge and should be used to alert rescuers of pets inside the home. Brochures, ID tags and emergency window stickers are available at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, located at 6230 77th Street, Vero Beach.
