Treasure Coast Food Bank seeks support for Summer Hunger Campaign

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Treasure Coast Food Bank is about half-way to its goal of raising $250,000 for a summer program to feed every child and teen who relies on the school system for meals.

Treasure Coast Food Bank is urging everyone to support its Summer Hunger Campaign so all 52,000 students on the Treasure Coast who depend upon free and low-cost school meals will have a chance for reliable, nutritious meals this summer.

“Our community really has a heart for its children, and we’re grateful for every donation we’ve received to help us achieve this goal. We’re already setting up summer feeding sites. But more are needed,” said Treasure Coast Food Bank CEO Judy Cruz. “We’re asking everyone to help us ensure that our children are not hungry this summer.”

The Summer Hunger Campaign will run through Friday, June 5, and all donations will be used to pay for additional, fully-stocked summer feeding sites. By adding more sites in more neighborhoods, Treasure Coast Food Bank is providing easier access for local children, many who must walk or ride their bikes to reach the summer feeding sites.

Treasure Coast Food Bank will kick off its Summer Feeding program with a family activity day and fresh produce distribution on Saturday, May 30 at its YourPlate Health & Wellness Center in Fort Pierce. Take a turn on the Smoothie Bike where you pedal off the calories while making a refreshing treat, or join in the hula hoop challenge. There also will be information tables where people can learn about summer feeding sites near their homes, as well as other programs for improved health and wellness.

“The day’s events and the fresh produce distribution highlight our commitment not only to making sure kids don’t go hungry but making sure they have access to nutritionally-balanced meals,” Cruz said.

The summer menu includes many items that will be prepared fresh daily – sandwiches, grilled chicken wraps, salads and fresh cut fruits and vegetables. Summer feeding sites are located in Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties.
