Dogs for Life holds open house for veterans May 11-15th

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Dogs For Life, Inc. will celebrate Armed Forces Week by offering an open house to all area veterans, May 11 through May 15, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Since the opening of our Training and Administrative Center in July of last year, we are excited to offer tours of the Center and offer information on how assistance dogs are trained as well as express our gratitude to our veterans for their service to our Country” said Shelly Ferger, DFL Founder and Director of Training Programs.

Board President Eleanor Bengyak said, “The number of clients we are working with to become Certified Hearing/Service Dogs has doubled in the last few months. So far, we have been able to keep up with the demand, but only because of the donations and volunteer work that goes into each client. Each dog mitigates the challenges to their owner from mobility or hearing loss or post-traumatic stress. These specially trained dogs perform tasks by assisting with medical and life coping situations for people right here in our community, including our military veterans, law enforcement officers and first responders.”
