Genealogical Society announces veterans project at Gifford Cemetery

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Genealogical Society (IRGS) is delighted to announce the latest joint project with the Gifford Cemetery Association, which will be held at 9 a.m. on May 16, 2015, at the Gifford Cemetery, 2852-3004 Lindsey Road, Vero Beach.

American flags will be placed at the graves of veterans who have served the United States. The flags are to be displayed from May 16 to June 6, 2015. Local press is invited for coverage and photographs.

Delores Hayes, coordinator for the Gifford Cemetery Association and Jack Berrigan, Project Leader for the IRGS Cemetery Project, have once again filled a need at the Gifford Cemetery. On May 16, members of the newly formed Gifford Boy Scout troop, led by Fred Woolfork of the Gifford Youth Activity Center, will place small American flags at the grave site of each veteran in the cemetery. The flags were donated by the local VFW post under the direction of Commander Steve Doane. The public is invited to visit the cemetery between May 16 and June 6 to view this Memorial Day tribute to those who served the country.

Previously, by working together with the management of the Gifford Cemetery, a joint team was created with IRGS to the locate the cemetery records, identify the grave markers and photograph them. A new system to identify the graves by rows and site numbers was also donated and completed in February 2015. The Society sees this partnership as a way to lend a hand in the community and meet its objective of “paying it forward.”
