VERO BEACH — Dick Kerr, Vice Chairman of the Old Vero Ice Age Site Committee, will discuss the site at a Spring Salad Luncheon sponsored by the Vero Beach Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, at Christ-by-the-Sea United Methodist Church, 3755 Hwy. A1A, Vero Beach.
The luncheon is free and open to the public. Attendees are welcome to bring any large salad or dessert to share.
Fossils were discovered about 100 years ago at the Ice Age Site, and they have been the subject of controversy, debate and discussion ever since. Kerr will share what the environment around the site might have looked like 14,000 years ago, discuss the initial discovery of the bones from at least five humans and from large, extinct mammals, and the controversy it generated among experts in the field who, until the bones were discovered, believed humans had been in Florida for only 7,000 years.
Kerr will also discuss the origin of the Ice Age Site Committee and what has been found more recently.
