SEAL Museum hosts ‘cane’ ceremony for vets Jan. 17

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The National Navy SEAL Museum, located at 3300 N Highway A1A on North Hutchinson Island will host the Indian River Woodcarvers for a special “cane” ceremony on Saturday Jan.17, 2015, at 1 p.m.

Nineteen combat wounded veterans from all branches of service will receive a hand carved cane with the imprint of the warrior’s name, rank and awards.

“One of the canes will be awarded to Medal of Honor recipient Melvin Morris,” Lloyd Lasenby, Indian River Woodcarvers member revealed.

Army WWII Veteran Rudy Washawsky will also be honored. Washawsky’s story was told on the mini-series “Band of Brothers.”

Also scheduled to attend is Army Major General Wayne Jackson (retired), Air Force veteran and Ex Vietnam POW Bill Arcuri, and Navy SEAL Master Chiefs retired, Rick Kaiser and Ken Corona.

The Indian River Woodcarvers Association meets every Thursday at the Moose lodge in Vero Beach from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and classes are offered free of charge.
