Cultural Council holds open meeting Jan. 14

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Cultural Council of Indian River County will be holding a series of open meetings for the public to offer insight and suggestions for a Cultural Arts Center in Vero Beach. The first meeting will be held at the Heritage Center at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14. All are welcome.

Over the last year, the Cultural Council has been exploring the idea of a Cultural Arts Center, at first to be housed in the Old Diesel Power Plant. Since the early plans, the property has entered litigation and the high speed trains and increase in freight coming to the tracks just 25 feet from the building have become a point of concern. This has caused the Cultural Council to look at other options.

The Cultural Council is calling on the community of arts and cultural organizations, producers, engaged patrons and others who want to participate in growing the cultural life of the community to participate in a discussion about fostering cultural growth across the County.

Discussions about this project have brought more people and more ideas forward; things like artist’s studios, a hot glass factory, a ceramics facility, performance and rehearsal spaces, arts technology support and recording and film studios are all being entertained. In addition, the Cultural Arts Center Leadership Team has visited several cultural arts centers and have listened to ideas from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and local leaders.
