Astronomer to speak at North IRC Library Jan. 13

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Join visiting astronomer Kevin Manning as he presents an educational and entertaining exploration of the universe at the North Indian River County Library on Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Manning is a gifted astronomer, having worked as a consultant with NASA, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory launched on the space shuttle with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and other ground-based observatories. He won national and international awards in his field, was both a Wright Fellow and an Einstein Fellow, and did some work with Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Besides the numerous workshops that Manning has presented over the years at libraries, observatories, and science centers, some noteworthy ones include those made at Tufts University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, the National Science Teachers Association’s National Convention, American Association for the Advancement of Science Breakfast with Scientists, and the National Parks Service.

After the dynamic and engaging presentation, if weather permits, the audience will have an opportunity to venture outside to view the amazing rings of Saturn, craters of the moon and other jewels of the night sky through a powerful telescope.

The Library is located at 1001 Sebastian Boulevard, three miles west of U.S. 1 in Sebastian. Admission to this program, sponsored by the Friends of the North Indian River County Library, is free and open to all ages. Call (772) 589-1355 for more information.
