Book review breakfast features young adult fiction, Jan. 5

VERO BEACH — Some of today’s most exciting fiction is in what’s often called the “young adult” fiction genre. Don’t be fooled, a good read is a good read, at any age. For proof, come to the Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Monday, Jan. 5, when Tiffanie McCurdy, specialist in Young Adult (YA) fiction with the Vero Beach Book Center, will discuss There Will Be Lies, a brand-new release by Nick Lake.

The breakfast offers refreshments at 9:30; the discussion begins at 10 a.m. in the Richardson Center, on the Mueller Campus of Indian River State College, 6155 College Lane, Vero Beach. The breakfast is free and open to the public.

“YA fiction is a very broad genre, and lots of YA readers are adults,” said McCurdy. “There Will Be Lies features a fairly typical teenage girl resisting an overprotective mother – but the reason is not what you’d expect.”

Lake’s suspenseful novel focuses on an 18-year-old heroine who is thrust by shocking events into a flight from danger that causes her to question everything about her past and current reality.

“This novel is a little bit mystery, a little adventure, all set in contemporary Arizona,” McCurdy added.

Lake has written several contemporary adventure novels, including Hostage Three, in which a family on a sailing trip is taken hostage by Somolian pirates.

Come learn about what today’s young adults are reading. The book review breakfasts are being presented for the 30th year by the AAUW. They are free and open to the public; reservations are not required. A continental breakfast will be served on the veranda at 9:30 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by the book review in the Mueller auditorium.
