Fielden Institute opens 9th distinguished lecture series Dec. 11

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning at Indian River State College invites new subscribers to enjoy its ninth season of experts and educators as they speak on current issues.

The series will open Thursday, Dec. 11, with Dr. Allan Friedman’s presentation “Cybersecurity: Understanding Digital Risks and Policy Challenges.” Friedman will speak at the IRSC Mueller Campus in Vero Beach from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and again at the IRSC Chastain Campus in Stuart from 3-5 p.m.

Dr. Friedman is a Visiting Scholar at George Washington University’s Cyber Security Policy Research Institute, and co-author of “Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know.” This lecture will discuss how we establish workable cyber security when many of these systems are owned and operated by public utilities or private businesses.

The Fielden Institute lecture series focuses on subjects in foreign policy, the environment, education, health and the economy. Family Private Care continues their support of lifelong learning at IRSC as Presenting Sponsor for the lecture series.

On Jan. 8, Barry Moline will present, “The Many Faces of Power Sources in Florida in Ten Years.” Moline is the Executive Director of the Florida Municipal Electric Association. Mr. Moline represents Florida’s 34 publicly owned electric utilities before the legislature and regulatory agencies.

On Feb. 12, John Gerlaugh will speak on “The Untold War in Iraq and Afghanistan: Helping Local Communities Rebuild.” A former United States Marine Corps Officer, Gerlaugh is currently on assignment as a Senior Foreign Affairs and Stabilization Consultant. This lecture describes his experiences from a “bugs eye view” on the ground in both Iraq and Afghanistan, including the challenges of trying to develop and implement enduring stability.

On March 12, Dr. Andrew Cullison will present, “A Discussion on Ethics.” The Director of the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics and an associate professor of philosophy at DePauw University, Dr. Cullison has taught at SUNY-Fredonia for seven years, and was recently awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is currently the secretary-treasurer of the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division and serves on the Association’s Board of Officers.

On April 9, David M Smick will speak on “A Discussion on the Global Economy.” Smick is a global macroeconomic strategist, magazine editor and author, most recently of the best-seller The World Is Curved: Hidden Dangers to the Global Economy (Penguin Portfolio), which predicted the 2008 global financial crisis.

Doors open 30 minutes prior to the lecture and subscribers are offered open seating. Lectures last one hour and are followed by a moderated 30-minute question and answer session. Refreshments follow the lecture portion of the program in the morning and are enjoyed prior to the afternoon lecture.

Lectures are held at the IRSC Mueller Campus, Richardson Center, 6155 College Lane, Vero Beach, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and from 3-5 p.m. at the IRSC Chastain Campus, 2400 S.E. Salerno Road, Stuart. Series subscriptions are $150 for all five lectures. Individual lecture seats, should they be available, will be offered at $50 one week prior to each of the lectures.
