FELLSMERE — The City of Fellsmere announced it is sponsoring its second annual “Holiday Hunt” to provide food for those in the community who are food insecure during this Holiday season. The hunt is a partnership between the City of Fellsmere and “Hunters Against Hunger,” a licensed 501c3 corporation in Indian River County since January, 2011.
The hunt will occur on 86 acres of land owned by the City of Fellsmere located at the northwest corner of I-95 and CR 512 and other lands within Indian River County.
The hunt began Friday, Nov. 7 and will end no later than Sunday, Dec. 14 at 10 p.m. The “Fellsmere 86” parcel of land is the current home of the Florida Institute of Technology’s Army ROTC obstacle course and the Trailhead Preserve Welcome Center that is currently under construction.
The City of Fellsmere already allows a limited number of hunters to hunt and trap wild hog on the property to prevent damage to the land while it is being developed. The City of Fellsmere partnered with Hunters Against Hunger in 2013 because of its relationship with the Harvest Food and Outreach Center of Vero Beach.
Hunters Against Hunger has been providing wild game to the Center for three years and has an established process for preparing the game for consumption.
This year, the City of Fellsmere and Hunter’s Against Hunger are looking to expand the hunting areas by partnering with local property owners who already hunt and trap on their land that would be willing to donate game taken during the hunt period. Negotiations are underway with some property owners, but organizers would like to hear from other land owners who may be interested in participating.
