Homeless Family Center raises awareness of hunger and homelessness, Nov. 16-22

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Homeless Family Center (HFC) will bring awareness to the critical state of the homeless families and the hungry in the community during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (NHHAW) Nov. 16-22. There will be numerous activities taking place throughout the community in collaboration with other local nonprofits.

HFC along with Camp Haven, The Source and Samaritan Center will be hosting a bus tour. Members of the community will be able to go behind the scenes and learn about the centers’ operations and programs, meet the staff and residents, and experience the daily happenings on Nov. 17 and 18.

Additionally, Indian River County Commission for NHHAW’s Proclamation will be read Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. and Saint Lucie County Commission for NHHAW’s Proclamation will be read at 6 p.m. HFC will be holding its open house Wednesday, Nov. 19, 4-7 p.m., at its campus and thrift store, 720 4th Street and 490 Old Dixie Highway, Vero Beach.

Individuals will also be able to “Dine for the Homeless” at Grille on the Green on Nov. 20 with 10 percent of proceeds going to the nonprofits.

Lastly, HFC’s A Second Chance Thrift Store and Training Center, The Source Thrift Shop and The Salvation Army Thrift Store will host a ‘Thrift Store Crawl’ Nov. 21, 9-4 p.m. Customers will be able to shop the day away, searching for that perfect bargain, with special discounts at all three locations where shopping supports the homeless in the community.

The awareness activities are all made possible by the dedicated individuals who are entrenched in the community and supporting local nonprofits.

HFC, a United Way Agency, provides opportunities for homeless families to end homelessness by achieving self-sufficiency through education, living wages and permanent housing. HFC provides the tools to empower residents by helping them to identify and resolve their problems, find better jobs, and ultimately move into homes where they can become contributing members of the community.

HFC also has A Second Chance Thrift Store and Training Center (ASC) located at 490 Old Dixie Highway, Vero Beach. Donations are accepted year round and merchandise pick-up is available.

Individuals interested in donating to the thrift store, volunteering or touring HFC may call (772)-567-5537 or visit www.homelessfamilycenter.com.
