BONZ: Spencer, the Island Club shih tzu, can hardly wait for cocktail hour

Hi dog buddies,

Chewy, one of my central beach dog buddies, and I were yapping the other day when he told me about his pal Spencer. Chewy said Spencer was eager to be featured in my column.

“Oh yeah?” I said. “What’s his story?”

“Spencer is a 9-year-old shih tzu who lives with his humans Diane and Larry Wilhelm in the Island Club,” Chewy said. “But just between you and me Bonz, Spencer is a bit indulged.”

“Huh? What does that mean?” I asked.

“Well, Spencer told me when Diane and Larry have their cocktail hour at 5pm, he always snacks on string cheese,” Chewy said. “And at meal time, along with his dog food, he gets steak, chicken or salmon.”

“No way,” I said drooling. I had to hear how he does it, so I trotted out to the Island Club.

When I met with Spencer, I found a fetching little fella. ‘Hi, Bonzo,” he said. I’m really excited to meet you.”

“It’s my pleasure, Spencer,” I said. “Tell me how you came to live at Island Club.”

“That’s an interesting story, Bonzo,” Spencer said. “You see, a friend of a relative was moving back to England and couldn’t take me during the summer. She asked a relative of my humans to find me a good home, and I’ve been living here with Diane and Larry ever since.”

“From what I’ve heard, things have worked out very well for you,” I said.

“Yes Bonzo, I have no complaints,” Spencer agreed. “My living arrangement suits me well. In the morning I get up and take a nice mile and a half stroll with Larry.

“Larry is my protector, especially when it comes to thunderstorms. I’m an independent guy when it comes to most things. But I don’t hesitate when it comes to jumping into a human’s lap during a thunderstorm.

“Diane is the love of my life,” Spencer continued. “I follow her everywhere and don’t like it one bit when she leaves.

“I wait by the door until Diane returns and bark like crazy when she comes home. If by some chance Diane is not in the returning car, I make sure to deliver the most heartbreaking, wretched yowl.

“Otherwise, my day is filled with a few good snoozes, a couple of more walks, playtime, eating my meals and having snacks at the cocktail hour,” Spencer said.

“Ah, yes, the cocktail hour,” I said starting to drool again. “I’ve heard about that.”

“Don’t be jealous, Bonzo,” Spencer said. “I’m sure you get plenty of snacks too. I can tell by just looking at you looking at you.” Huh?

Well, one thing is for sure. If your dog is ‘a bit indulged’ – I’m not saying I am, mind you, but I know these things – you can be sure your dog will love you more than anyone.

Till next time,

The Bonz
