Education Foundation receives Motorola grant

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Education Foundation of Indian River County (EF-IRC) received a $5,000 grant to support the students at Osceola Magnet. The project will launch a new science program to create “innovation stations” in classrooms.

This will give students the opportunity to learn and apply STEM skills beyond the classroom through an Innovation Generation grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation provided $50,000 for a second year to challenge Florida’s district-wide local education foundations to inspire students through projects designed to help them solve real world problems in science, math, technology, and engineering (STEM) areas this school year through a grant to the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF.)

Since 2007, the program has provided $3.4 million in support of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs, supporting more than 400 school, museum, and nonprofit programs across the United States and Canada.

The Innovation Generation program awards funds to organizations such as EF-IRC that foster and support STEM initiatives for teachers and U.S. preschool through university students, especially girls and underrepresented minorities.

Local Education Foundation’s project was one of nine chosen from among 21 applicants to receive $5,000 through a competitive, judging process with each application being reviewed and scored by a panel of STEM industry professionals through the CFEF.

“I have spoken to the students at Osceola Magnet School about this grant, and they are very excited, as it will be used for a LEGO project that will enhance their STEM experiences.

They cannot wait to get started. We are extremely grateful to Motorola Solutions Foundation and to the Education Foundation of Indian River County for this opportunity for our students,” explained Dr. Fran Adams, Superintendent of Schools.

“We are so honored to partner with organizations like the Education Foundation of Indian River County who are helping to create the world’s future innovators and technology professionals,” said Matt Blakely, director, Motorola Solutions Foundation.

Innovation Generation is a part of Motorola Solutions’ larger commitment to engaging youth in STEM education. Beyond funding, Osceola Magnet will receive ongoing support from Motorola Solutions’ employee volunteers, who will act as mentors, tutors, and experts in STEM careers.
