VERO BEACH — Literacy Service of Indian River County is pleased to announce its highly popular Love of Literacy luncheon will be held at the Vero Beach Country Club on Thursday, April 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Literacy Services is honored to have Mr. Martyn Lewis as the keynote speaker.
Mr. Martyn Lewis was the BBC news presenter from the 1980’s to the late 1990’s. Mr. Lewis received the Order of the British Empire award in 1997 for his services to young people and the hospice movement.
He has also been made a Commander of the British Empire by the Queen and has served as chairman in countless charities. Mr. Lewis supports charities in the field of hospice, youth, and those with learning disabilities or mental health issues.

Literacy Services of Indian River County, Inc, a nonprofit 501(c) (3) United Way agency partner, provides one-on-one tutoring to local adults desiring to improve their literacy skills.
It is estimated that 20% of local adults have substandard reading skills. A well-known fact is if a parent can’t read, then it is highly likely the child can’t read.
This was substantiated by a recent 2010 study that revealed that the single most determining factor of a child’s academic success is the literacy skills of the mother.
Literacy Services utilizes volunteer tutors, and the tutors do not need to have a teaching background.
