Captain Rodney Smith to speak at Fishing Museum

SEBASTIAN — Captain Rodney Smith will speak at the Sebastian Inlet State Park Fishing Museum in celebration of this September’s Florida Literacy Month on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. Captain Smith will share stories, fishing tips and advice, and sign copies of his book, Catching Made Easy and Enjoying Life on the Indian River Lagoon Coast.

Captain Smith is a Florida native and conservation advocate. He is publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine and has enjoyed life along Florida’s Space Coast, where he has always been eager to share his lifetime of knowledge, skills, and advice on fishing, gardening and conserving the things that he loves. Copies of his books and surf fishing guides/maps will be available for sale in the Fishing Museum gift shop.

The Sebastian Fishing Museum in located in the park, 9700 South A1A in Melbourne Beach. Park admission fees apply.

FWC saves two people clinging on overturned vessel at Sebastian Inlet

Florida Fish and Wildlife officers rescued two people clinging onto an overturned vessel late Saturday at the Sebastian Inlet, Indian River County sheriff's officials said. The incident prompted the response of several agencies, including FWC, Indian River County Sheriff's Office, Brevard County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard. No injuries were reported, sheriff's officials said. Sebastian Inlet Park open except for campgrounds

A return to a new normal is underway at our community's state parks and environmental education and conservation organizations following COVID-19-related closures. Effective Friday at 8 a.m., Sebastian Inlet State Park reopened for 24-hour visitation throughout the park, except for campgrounds.   Beachgoers and anglers fishing from the jetties are expected to follow social distancing guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including staying six feet apart. Beach cleaner finds possible bundle of cocaine

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Abe Sadowsky's first beach clean up on Sunday also turned into his first time discovering a suspicious bundle possibly packed with cocaine. "I thought to myself, 'This looks like a kilo of cocaine,'" said Sadowsky, 28, of West Palm Beach. "It was crazy." Sadowsky was with a group of people picking up trash along the beach shortly before noon Sunday at the Sebastian Inlet, 14251 Highway A1A.
