Vero Beach Theatre Guild season opens with ‘All My Sons’

VERO BEACH — Old-time radio hours, a witch in search of love and a glimpse into the characters and cause of the quintessential 20th century tragedy, the sinking of the Titanic, are just some of the themes for the Vero Beach Theatre Guild’s upcoming season which starts this month.

The season opens on Sept. 15 with a classic by Arthur Miller, “All My Sons.”

Set in 1947, the play follows the life of Joe Keller and delves into the struggles between family, honor and integrity.

“All My Sons” runs from Sept. 15-25.

Next up is a musical “1940’s Radio Hour,” which opens Nov. 10.

“1940’s Radio Hour” is set in a seedy New York radio station at the start of World War II.

Clifton Feddington, the station’s producer, announcer and general manager, is trying to record a broadcast for the troops overseas. His efforts are confounded by a drunk.

The play portrays the final holiday broadcast of the Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade radio station WOV over Christmas 1942.

The play runs from Nov. 10 – 25.

The New Year kicks into gear on Jan. 12 when the guild brings, “Born Yesterday.”

Written by Garson Kanin, “Born Yesterday” is a story of a corrupt tycoon, Harry Brock, and his showgirl mistress. Brock’s attempts to educate his mistress backfire when she learns of his shady business dealings.

“Born Yesterday” runs Jan. 12 – 22.

Next up and just in time for the upcoming 100th anniversary of the iconic maritime disaster, the sinking of the Titanic is “Titanic, The Musical,” which opens March 15.

With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston from book by Peter Stone, the play examines the drama of the sinking. “Titanic, The Musical” opened on Broadway in 1997.

It won five Tony Awards including best musical award. The musical runs March 15 through April 1.

The guild rounds out the 2011- 2012 season with a romantic comedy, “Bell, Book and Candle” starting May 10.

By John Van Druten, the play delves into the life of a Greenwich Village witch Gillian Holroyd.
