Kick off the US Open at Riverside Racquet Complex

VERO BEACH — Riverside Racquet Complex is kicking off the US Open with an evening of adult activities, round robin tennis and drills with tennis pro Ken MacDougall teaching double’s strategy. The event takes place on Wednesday, August 24 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Check in is at 5:30 p.m.

Light refreshments and prize giveaways will be provided. Stop by the tennis pro-shop and sign up for an evening of fun on the courts. All levels are welcome from beginners to advanced players. If you can’t participate stop by and check out all the action on the courts.

Pre-registration by Monday, Aug. 22 is required. A maximum of 24 spaces are available.

The fees are $10 for members; $12 for non-members.

Vero Beach breaks daily rainfall record from weekend storms

Vero Beach broke the daily rainfall record after drenching showers slammed Florida and other parts of the east coast over the weekend, meteorologists said. Wet weather was not in the forecast this week, but could return with a 40 percent chance of showers next Monday - Christmas Day, meteorologists say. "It will continue to stay dry through much of tomorrow," said Derrick Weitlich, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne. "Rain chances will pick up as we get closer to the weekend." Weather experts reported 2.13 inches of rainfall in Vero Beach on Saturday. Palm Bay woman charged in fatal Sunday hit-and-run crash

VERO BEACH — A Palm Bay woman who police said fatally struck a man walking along Indian River Boulevard, stopped to switch seats with a passenger in the car and then continued traveling northbound, was jailed Sunday. The driver, Shanice Person, told officers she became aware she struck something large in the middle of the road that was likely alive and could possibly be a person, reports show. "She said that she was so intoxicated that she didn't know what she hit, so she kept driving and stopped the car near 37th Street," police said in an arrest report.
