School supplies being collected for local youth

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Gifford Youth Activity Center is now collecting school supplies to help local youth get the 2011 school year off to a good start when school begins in August. School supplies – everything from paper and pencils, folders and crayons, to backpacks and calculators can be dropped off at GYAC.

Supplies are also being collected at three other locations in the community for Gifford Youth Activity Center students – Holy Cross Catholic Church, Indian River Credit Union and Indian River Medical Center. Tax deductible cash donations will also be accepted at all locations, and GYAC staff will shop for needed items.

Gifford Youth Activity Center is located at 4875 43rd Avenue in Vero Beach. Donations will be accepted weekdays between 8 am and 5 pm.

2 wounded in late Monday shooting; deputies investigating

GIFFORD — Two people suffered non-life threatening injuries following a double shooting late Monday, Indian River County sheriff's deputies reported. It was the second reported shooting to take place in Indian River County over the Labor Day weekend. Both incidents are not connected, sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Jaworski said. Details on the motive in Monday's shooting were not immediately available. Man killed in overnight shooting in Gifford

GIFFORD — A man in his early 20s was killed after being struck by gunfire overnight, authorities said. Indian River County sheriff's officials said there was no known danger to the public but are investigating the case as a homicide. "Currently, detectives are working all leads," sheriff's officials said in a statement. "There is no suspect information that can be presently shared."
