Dr. Fran Adams to become official Schools Chief June 28

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Incoming Indian River County Schools Superintendent Dr. Fran Adams will get an early start to her three-year contract with the district.

Her first day as the official schools chief will begin June 28 at one second after midnight.

The School Board unanimously approved beginning her contract a few days early after also unanimously approving ending out-going Superintendent Dr. Harry La Cava’s contract.

La Cava submitted a letter of resignation on June 16, following a School Board during which School Board member Carol Johnson asked for a special meeting to consider relieving La Cava of his post.

“In determining my effectiveness as the Superintendent of Schools, I have concluded that my best course of action is to move my retirement date from June 30, 2011, to June 27, 2011,” La Cava wrote in his letter addressed to School Board Chair Matt McCain.

In his letter, La Cava also informed McCain that he would be taking June 20 through 27 off.

The School Board officially approved the time off during Tuesday afternoon’s meeting.

“It has been a rewarding experience serving as the Superintendent of Schools in

Indian River County for the past four years,” La Cava wrote.

Johnson had requested the special meeting in order to install Dr. Adams as the superintendent ahead of July 1, the district’s deadline to have administrative personnel recommended to certain posts.

La Cava did not support Adams’s administrative organizational chart, nor her recommendations of personnel to those positions. He had told the School Board that he did not feel comfortable making such recommendations.

Johnson said at last week’s School Board meeting that she did not feel that it was right to ask him to make recommendations with which he was not comfortable.

Both Johnson and School Board member Claudia Jimenez thanked Dr. Adams for “stepping up” and being willing to start her job early.
