Airboat Association, Fellsmere Lions Club help students with school funds

FELLSMERE – Four students will be attending college in the fall with a $1,000 head start on their school fees thanks to a partnership between the Indian River County Airboat Association and Fellsmere Lions Club.

The Indian River County Airboat Association had enough funds to award one scholarship to an area student – but not enough to help three others who had applied.

The Fellsmere Lions Club had the funds – and a need to hand it out.

“I just happened to have that extra pot of gold for them,” dual member Wanda Szeman said, and approached her fellow Lions about helping the Airboat group with the scholarships.

Amber Nies, Marie Wood and Sarah Duncan each received $1,000 apiece at Monday evening’s Indian River County Airboat Association meeting. Alysia Beam received her scholarship at last month’s meeting.

Nies will be attending University of Central Florida and graduated high school with a 3.5 gpa. Wood ended high school with a 3.25 gpa and will attend Indian River State College. Duncan earned a 3.5 gpa and plans to attend Florida Institute of Technology. Beam earned a 4.0 gpa and will attend Brevard Community College.

“It can be so hard” to choose a scholarship winner, Szeman said, so having the Fellsmere Lions Club help with funding meant no choice had to be made.

Scholarships are available to students whose families are members of the Indian River County Airboat Association, with deadline for applying in early April.
