Robert ‘Bob’ Fredrick Hawkins, 84, Vero Beach

Robert “Bob” Fredrick Hawkins, 84, of Vero Beach, died May 5, 2011, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach after a short battle with lung cancer.

Hawkins was born in Hempstead, N.Y., served during World War II in the Navy aboard the USS LST-1088 and eventually retired from the N.Y. Police Department in Nassau County after 20 years of service. He moved his family to Vero Beach in 1971.

Hawkins went to work for the Commercial Bank of Vero Beach and then retired from Barnett Bank of Indian River Co.

Survivors include his wife Eleanor (Ellie) Hawkins; son & daughter- in-law Robert and MaryBeth Hawkins, Jr., of Lexington Ky; daughter & son-in-law Sandra & Steven Gellinger, of Maryville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Clint R. Freddell, of Vero Beach, and Scott Gellinger, of Maryville, Tenn.; his brother and sister-in-law George and Maryann Hawkins, of Vero Beach; a nephew & niece; step- family, Bill & Kim Lasky, and their extended family, Nancy Lundborg and two step-grandchildren Isabella & Aiden Lasky.

Hawkins is preceded in death by his late wife of 40 years, Joan Hawkins, his mother, father and sister.

Hawkins was a member of The Community Church of Vero Beach at which a memorial service will be held May 24, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., in the Chapel located at 1901 23rd St.
