Bart D. Simmons, 38, Vero Beach

Bart D. Simmons, 38, died April 3, 2011, at the VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach.

He was born in Hollywood and lived in Vero Beach for five years, coming from Broward County.

He was a self-employed trim carpenter.

He was a member of Central Assembly of God in Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Simmons, of Vero Beach; parents, Sam Simmons, of Broward County and Shirley Simmons, of Missouri; and twin brother, Brett Simmons, of Fordland, Mo.

Memorial contributions may be made to Teen Challenge, 801 154th Ave., Vero Beach, FL 32966.

A celebration of life service will be at 7 p.m. April 8 at Central Assembly of God in Vero Beach with the Rev. Buddy Tipton as officiant.

Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Lifeguards said about 54,105 beachgoers flocked to the shore in January. The highest beach-attendance record of 65,700 was set in 2019 for Vero Beach, lifeguards said. Community Development Department closes in-person services

The Community Development Department closed in-person services Monday as county officials implement more health precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Officials plan to add more physical barriers to the front counters inside the building, which already has temperature scanners installed. County employees and those who visit county facilities are already required to wear masks inside. County Administrator Jason Brown was not immediately available to confirm reports that six employees in the Community Development Department tested positive for the virus.
