Florida Comets Basketball/Showcase to be held April 2

VERO BEACH — Florida Comets has announced that a “Showcase” basketball fundraiser will take place at Oslo Middle School Saturday, April 2.  The basketball event will feature all seven Florida Comet teams starting at 11 a.m. with the 6th grade Florida Lady Comets and finishing with the 6th grade boys Florida Comets at 5 p.m.

The teams will be playing other Regional groups, including the Lakeland Fire and the Titusville LilCity Elite.  Proceeds from this event will go toward covering the cost of uniforms, gym costs, player registrations and travel costs.

The Florida Comets Head Coach is Dr. Bennie Shaw, an assistant principal at Sebastian River Middle School.  Shaw, a former NBA player and Hall of fame recipient from UCF, started the program in 2005 in Titusville, Florida (then known as the Lady Comets) to help children in the community build confidence in life and gain access to a college education.

In the 2009/2010 season the Florida Comets AAU Basketball grew from one team to six, involving boys and girls grades 5 through 8. The capstone moment was when the now 7th grade girls won the National championship in Greensboro N.C. in June 2010.

A non-profit 501c3 organization, Florida Comets basketball is dedicated to the advancement and development of youth through basketball to insure access to a college education.
