Tourist tax dollars in Indian River County for January down nearly 25 percent

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Despite frigid temperatures and record snowfall up north during January, tourist tax dollars were low in Indian River County.

It is for those same reasons Indian River County officials believe the numbers were low.

“Cold weather throughout the country” is believed to have “impeded travel plans,” officials said.

Tourist tax dollars are collected from a portion of the bed taxes assessed on hotel and motel stays.

January’s collection was down about $39,000 from January 2010 – about 25 percent.

Figures for February have not yet been released.
