Miss Hibiscus Pageant contestant deadline is March 25

VERO BEACH — A very special part of the 2011 Hibiscus Festival is the Miss Hibiscus Pageant, which will be held on Friday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Heritage Center in downtown Vero Beach.  The first of a two day event of festivities, the Pageant is sponsored by Merrill Lynch-Nelson Morgan Wealth Management. Single girls, who are Indian River County residents and between the ages of 16 and 20 years old, are invited to compete for the coveted title and are urged to submit their application before the Friday, March 25 deadline.

Miss Hibiscus 2011 will preside over the Hibiscus Festival activities on Saturday, April 16 and will represent historic downtown Vero Beach throughout the year.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
