Dirt! The Movie next in Social Justice Film Series

VERO BEACH — The community-wide, nondenominational Social Justice Film Series continues its fifth year on Sunday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach, with Dirt! The Movie, a witty yet poignant look at man’s relationship with dirt. The film is free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations are required.  Susan Keiffer, an avid gardener and nutritionist, will facilitate the discussion afterward. Narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, this 2009 award-winning documentary was inspired by New York Times columnist William Bryant Logan’s acclaimed 1996 book, Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth.

For most of the last ten thousand years we humans understood our intimate bond with dirt and the rest of nature.  We took care of the soils that took care of us.  But, over time, we lost that connection.  Our species became greedy and careless.  We still depend on dirt, but now we abuse and ignore it.

We are destroying our last natural resource with our agriculture, our mining, and our paving over the planet for cities.  We turned dirt into something “dirty.”  In doing so, we transformed the skin of the earth into a hellish and dangerous landscape for all life on earth.

A millennial shift in consciousness about the environment offers a beacon of hope –  and practical solutions.  Around the globe, people are coming together to save earth’s last natural resource.

The Fair Trade Corner will be open one-half hour before and after the film.
