Youth Sailing Foundation to host Open House Jan. 17

VERO BEACH — The Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County is hosting an Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, January 17 (Martin Luther King Day) to show off their fleet of small sailboats (Optimist dinghies), all built by kids, parents and volunteers, and to introduce everyone to their sailing programs. Visit them at the shop area where they actually build the boats, located behind the large boat storage building south of the Vero Beach Yacht Club and the Vero Beach Municipal Marina. Volunteers will be on-hand to talk about the steps required to build your own boat and about the sailing classes that take place in their classrooms and on the water at Saturday practices.

Students and boats also participate in regattas (short races on the water) in Melbourne, Palm Beach, Jenson Beach and Fort Pierce.  Boats are put onto a large special trailer to take them to the regattas where families and young sailors enjoy a great day of racing and having fun on the water.

Several current students will be on hand to tell of their experiences, building and painting their boats with help from their families and specially trained volunteers.  You will also learn about plans for some very special summer programs.

The open house is free and open to everyone; soft drinks and light refreshments will be offered.
