James F. “Jimmy” Whalen, 74, Vero Beach

James F. “Jimmy” Whalen, 74, died Jan. 1, 2011, at his residence in Vero Beach.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., and lived in Fort Pierce and Vero Beach for 53 years coming from Hartford, Mich.

Whalen served in the US Army and later owned and operated Jimmy’s Welding and Auto Repair in Vero Beach since 1977.

Survivors include his sons, Bob Whalen, of Vero Beach, Scott Whalen, of West Palm Beach, Tommy Whalen, of Vero Beach; sisters, Alice Haines, of Fort Pierce, Mary Ann Trudell, of Fort Pierce; former wife, Yvonne Whalen, of Vero Beach; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Jones; and brothers, Jackie and Bobby Whalen

Memorial contributions may be made to The Hibiscus Children’s Center, 1145 12th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Visitation will be 2 – 4 p.m. on Jan. 8, at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach, followed by a prayer service at 4 p.m. with Deacon Joe DiMauro of St. Helen Catholic Church, Vero Beach officiating.
