Ash falling near Sebastian Airport from 2,600-acre Brevard wildfire

NORTH INDIAN RIVER COUNTY–Reports of ash falling from the sky in the area of Sebastian Municipal Airport could be from a 2,600-acre wildfire burning in Brevard County, three miles west of Palm Bay.

Divison of Forestry spokeswoman Melissa Yunis said the northern part of Indian River County can expect to experience heavy smoke and some ash for the next couple days while firefighters and forestry officials battle the Brevard blaze.

Yunis said there is no cause for concern among Indian River County residents and it is unlikely the fire will dip south into the area.

Instead strong winds traveling south are carrying the smoke and ash from the fire, she said.

Meanwhile, four wildfires are burning west of Indian River County in Okeechobee County, keeping those officials busy.

The Treasure Coast counties, including Indian River, have been dry recently due to the lack of rain and the cold temperatures.

Residents are reminded to use caution when handling anything that can cause a spark. Residents who inadvertently spark a wildfire are asked to call 911 immediately so firefighters can extinguish the blaze before it gets out of control.
