WriteByNight announces winter workshop

A WriteByNight six-week Creative Writing Workshop will be held Tuesday s beginning  January 25 and running through March 1.  Workshops are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cultural Council of Indian River County, 2041 14th Avenue, Suite A, Vero Beach.  The cost (pre-registration required) is $210. This is your last chance to join a WriteByNight Creative Writing Workshop until 2012.  The six-week workshop offers professional evaluation of your writings, verbal feedback in a group setting, a supportive community of like-minded people, discussions of contemporary literature, tips on how to see your work published, and a 30-minute private consultation with the workshop instructor. Writers of all experience levels and genres are welcome.

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. Sea turtle conservation workshop held Friday

Photo by Dan Alexander Vero Beach oceanfront residents and business owners attended a free workshop from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. last Friday on sea turtle conservation through turtle-friendly lighting. The workshop was held at the Intergenerational Recreation Center, 1590 9th St. S.W., Vero Beach.  Pre-registration was not required, and a free lunch was served. Attendees learned about city and county 'dark beach' ordinances aimed at protecting nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings, and the code enforcement protocols for enforcing those laws.  They also heard from local lighting experts about turtle-friendly installations and retrofits, and lighting distributors displayed their products. Attendance

Attendance/social work staff responds to attendance and truancy referrals following school district policies, procedures and established law. Reasons for attendance and truancy issues are assessed and a plan of action is developed to improve attendance. This process includes home visits, conferencing with family and teachers, and participation in the school Student Support Team. Referrals and networking with community agencies are also conducted to identify prevention and remedial interventions for students. Staff assists with expulsion reviews, truancy court proceedings and analyzing enrollment and attendance data.
