Brass Concerts Promises Big Band Jazz

SEBASTIAN — The Space Coast Symphony brass section is teaming up with an all-star lineup of brass players from around the Sunshine State to bring “A Stan Kenton Brass Christmas!” to Indian River County.  The musicians will pay tribute to Kenton’s “big band jazz” style in an all-brass holiday spectacular at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 11 at the Sebastian River High School Auditorium, 9001 Shark Boulevard in Sebastian.

The Space Coast Symphony’s young conductor, Aaron Collins, is excited to bring “A Stan Kenton Brass Christmas!” to Sebastian.  The all-brass ensemble will be joined by a jazz rhythm section for an evening featuring Big Band arrangements of holiday classics from the 1961 Stan Kenton Christmas Album.  These include O Holy Night, God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman, Angels We Have Heard on High, The Twelve Days of Christmas and more.   The 1961 original by progressive jazz legend Stan Kenton is considered by some to include the greatest Christmas Big Band arrangements of all time.

“This musical event goes way beyond entertaining,” said Collins.  “It is definitely not your typical holiday concert.  Essentially, we are recreating Stan Kenton’s original album from 1961, including the unusual original instrumentation.  I believe it is without a doubt, the best Big Band Christmas album ever and we are very excited to pay tribute to the legendary Stan Kenton.  The pure, full brass sound, the virtuosic lines, and the wit & energy of these arrangements will make for a great night!”

$10 tickets will be available at the door.  Aged 18 and under admitted free.
