Linden Church Pettys, 83, Vero Beach

Linden Church Pettys, 83, died Nov. 15, 2010, at his home.

He was born in Newton, Mass., and lived in Vero Beach since 1991, coming from Hilton Head Island, S.C. He was in the Naval Reserve during World War II, serving in the North Atlantic.

He attended the Merchant Marine Academy from 1945 to 1947.

Before retirement, he was an architect. He held a national architectural license and designed and built about 24 churches, including Grace Baptist Church and Mount Zion Baptist Church, both on 43rd Avenue in Vero Beach.

Other projects included small remodels to 10-story buildings.

He was a member of Christ Church in Vero Beach. In Ann Arbor, Mich., he was chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Mason County.

Appointed and under the direction of President Lyndon B. Johnson, he was chairman of the Secretary of Interior’s Advisory Board on National Parks, Historic Sites, Buildings and Monuments.

His education began at the Boston Architectural College and continued at the University of Michigan. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ann Elaine Pettys; and sons, Karl Galand Pettys, of Blowing Rock, N.C., and Paul Ivan Pettys, of Rock Hill, S.C.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 19 at Christ Church in Vero Beach. Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach.
