Keith Lockhart and BBC Concert Orchestra kicks off IRSA season

VERO BEACH — The opening concert of the Indian River Symphonic Association’s 2010-11 season will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 18 at the Community Church of Vero Beach.  Maestro Keith Lockhart will conduct the BBC Concert Orchestra in a program of favorite classical selections featuring Russian piano soloist Ilya Yakushev.

Yakushev, the Gold Medal winner in the 2005 World Piano Competition, will perform Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor.  Yakushev has performed with numerous major conductors and symphony orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas, and the Utah Symphony under Keith Lockhart.

The program will consist of:

Mozart:  The Marriage of Figaro: Overture

Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream –  Scherzo, Nocturne and Wedding March

Mendelssohn:  Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25

Vaughn Williams: Symphony No. 5 in D major

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. VBHS orchestra places in top 3 in national competition

A local high school ensemble showcased their musicianship among nine other schools around the country in a national competition in New York City, and placed in the top three, school officials said. The Vero Beach High School Philharmonic Orchestra, composed of 38 members, placed second-runner up in "The Orchestra Cup," which was held March 9 under the 2019 National School Orchestra Championships.
