Charles H. Landefeld, III, 77, Vero Beach

Charles H. Landefeld, III, 77, of Vero Beach, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2010 at Consulate Health Care.

Landefeld was born May 9, 1933 in Hollywood and had been a resident of Vero Beach for eight years, coming from his place of birth. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army Air Corps. He graduated from Yale University Law School and worked as an attorney in Hollywood prior to working as a stock broker in Boca Raton for many years. After retirement Mr. Landefeld moved to Vero Beach and began working as a security guard.

Survivors include his long time companion, Dottie Durham of Vero Beach; a son and a daughter.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Orchid police chief to retire this fall

TOWN OF ORCHID — Police Chief Phil Redstone, a lead investigator for a high-profile homicide case involving a suspected serial killer in the 1980's, is set to retire this fall. Redstone, whose family was one of the pioneer families in the area, has more than five decades of experience in law enforcement, including 15 with the Town of Orchid as a part-time chief of police. His retirement is effective Sept. 30, Town Manager Noah Powers said. "It is a tremendous milestone. Through his dedication of 50 years in law enforcement, he has volunteered to put himself in harms way if needed for citizens," Powers said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Environmental specialists with the Florida Department of Health in Indian River County collected water samples at the beaches Monday and on Jan. 28.
