Indian River County SWAT deputy wins Top Shooter award

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Indian River County Sheriff’s Deputy Christian Matheson was named “Top Shooter” in the Florida SWAT Association sponsored South Florida Sniper Seminar.  He beat out 38 others in his class for the honor.

Deputy Matheson had the target with the tightest group and won the top shooter award, which includes free entry into the upcoming spring shootout sniper competition in Orlando or a free training course offered by Florida SWAT Association for being the top shooter in the class. This year the class, held in Tampa, Fla., had teams from Louisiana, Georgia, all over Florida and as far as Brazil.

The course was basically a run and gun course from ranges of 25 yards to 300 yards.  It covered positional shooting, buddy shooting, shooting out of vehicles, setting up rural hides, setting up urban hides and setting up vehicle hides.

The final qualification course involved 200 yards of running, shooting from the prone position, shooting unsupported off of a table and shooting unsupported out of a window frame under a strict time limit.
